DIY and Asbestos Exposure

The increasing popularity of DIY home renovations could create a new wave of victims of asbestos-related diseases including mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.

An increasing number of home owners who attempt renovation work to their own properties, may not realise that asbestos could be hiding in unexpected places, if their home was built prior to 2000.

With the fashion for open plan living, more homeowners than ever are undertaking extensive intrusive works, such as the demolition of kitchens, bathrooms and outbuildings, removal of textured coatings to ceilings and walls will increase the risk of exposure to airborne asbestos fibers.

Before you start any job within your home, ensure you refer to the essential guidance page on the HSE website.
