Asbestos | Type 3 Intrusive Survey

Purpose

This type of survey uses destructive inspection techniques to establish and describe as far as practicable, all ACM’s in the fabric of the building including those areas difficult to reach. The volume of asbestos materials is established but no assessment of condition is required by the guidance document HSG264, other than to highlight areas of significant damage or debris. Having this type of survey undertaken can make for the beginnings of a smoothly running project and can protect site workers from accidental exposure to Asbestos fibres. Failure to have this type of survey prior to demolition or refurbishment works can result in prosecution, causes delays and can potentially be a very costly mistake.

This knowledge is essential under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 in order to properly manage your buildings

Method

During this type of survey the surveyor may need to break into wall cavities, enter confined spaces, lift manholes and access all areas within the fabric of the building. Prior to having this type of survey undertaken it is advisable that isolation of electrics be arranged to protect the safety of the surveyor. Outside of the scope of the surveyors work is any necessary remediation work after the site work has been completed, the client should make provision for this if deemed necessary.

As in a Type 2 Survey, samples will be taken and some items may be strongly presumed to contain asbestos if they are visually similar to a previously sampled item.

Result

A survey report will be created detailing the findings of the surveyor. Sample analysis results will be included along with the recommendations for removal of the ACMs. This report differs from the Type 2 Report in that all recommendations will be for removal. Legislation varies for removals based on the type of product and the type of asbestos it is composed of. This is made clear in the body of the report.
